Zambia confirmed their spot in the semifinal stage of the 2022 COSAFA U-20 Championship on Tuesday after finishing off Group A play with a perfect record by defeating Botswana 1-0. Kingstone Mulandwa took down a lofted free kick in the 3rd minute before blasting his shot past the Motswana keeper for the game’s only goal. Zambia finish the group stage with nine points and six goals while keeping their opponents off the scoreboard in all three matches.
In Group A’s other match on Tuesday, hosts Eswatini got the lopsided result they needed to keep their hopes of advancing alive. Mukelo Nkambule scored four goals in a 7-0 shutout of Mauritius to secure second place in the group and now Eswatini will anxiously watch the remainder of the group stage to see if they will join Zambia in the final four. Angola can overtake the hosts if they are able to defeat minnows Seychelles by three goals or more on Wednesday in Group B play while South Africa and Malawi will be hoping to sneak into the semifinals out of Group C.
