Rigobert Song trims Cameroon squad down to 25 players for AFCON qualifying

Cameroon manager Rigobert Song cut down his preliminary list of players to a 25-man squad as the Indomitable Lions kick off their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Burundi. Initially a matchup against Kenya awaited on June 4 but following their opponents’ failure to reverse a FIFA ban, Cameroon’s road match on June 8 against Burundi in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania will be the only fixture during the international break.

Striker and captain Vincent Aboubakar is back in the team along with fellow 2021 AFCON star Karl Toko Ekambi. Eric Choupo-Moting and BSC Young Boys forward Moumi Ngamaleu are also attacking options as well as 27-year-old Besiktas winger Georges-Kévin Nkoudou, who changed his international affiliation after previously being a French youth national team player. Another French-born player, 20-year-old RC Lens center back Christopher Wooh, is also in the squad after committing to play for Cameroon.

Many regular members of the 2021 AFCON squad are in the fold including center backs Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui and Jean-Charles Castelletto. Italian Serie A midfielders Martin Hongla and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa are also set to retain their starting positions as well as fullbacks Collins Fai and Nouhou Tolo.
