The Gambia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports aiming to have country host September AFCON match against Mali

The Gambia’s government is working towards restoring the national team’s home advantage after a lengthy period of being unable to host the Scorpions’ matches in the country due to not having a stadium that meets CAF’s standards. Following the team’s win over South Sudan which has hosted in neighboring Senegal, the country’s Minister of Youth and Sports Bakary Badjie stated that the government is in the advanced stages of finding a contractor to complete the necessary work involved in meeting CAF’s approval.

Badjie expressed optimism that the work will be complete before the end of September when the Scorpions are set to host Mali. The Gambia have not hosted a national team match since a friendly win against South Sudan in October 2021 and have not hosted a competitive home fixture since the Scorpions defeated Angola 2-1 to clinch their spot at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in March 2021.
