Naby Keïta set to join Werder Bremen on free transfer

After becoming the club’s record signing in July 2018 from Red Bull Leipzig, Naby Keïta’s tumultuous spell at Liverpool saw the Guinea national team star released and now Keïta will attempt to revive his club career back in Germany with Werder Bremen. The club from Northern Germany announced their acquisition of the 28-year-old on Friday where the former Horoya AC player will receive the role and minutes he never consistently received at Liverpool. Bremen finished in 13th place on the Bundesliga table for the 2022-23 season.

Keïta was brought in for a large fee of €60 million by Liverpool but due to injuries and inconsistent form, the move did not work out. The central midfielder produced 11 goals and 7 assists in 129 appearances over five seasons for Liverpool but the 2022-23 campaign saw him make only 13 appearances with no goal contributions.

Werder Bremen head of scouting Clemens Fritz declared the club’s intentions to help Keïta find his form. “We now want to get him back to his best…a number of clubs are obviously going to be interested when a player like Keita is available on a free transfer.” Fritz acknowledged that injury issues led to the decline of Keïta but Germany is where the Guinean spent his best years. At RB Leipzig, Keïta provided 17 goals and 9 assists in 71 appearances over two seasons after arriving from Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.
