Women’s Friendlies: Banyana Banyana defeat Costa Rica in tune up

Africa’s representatives at the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup are finalizing their preparations for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand with a couple of friendly matches taking place. 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations champions South Africa were among the teams in action, achieving a 2-0 victory over fellow World Cup participants Costa Rica.

After a send off debacle back home, Banyana Banyana’s full strength side gave supporters reason to be hopeful ahead of their participation in Group G that begins on July 23 against Sweden. Thembi Kgatlana scored in the first half Hildah Magaia doubled the lead early in the second half.

Nigeria were also finishing up their preparations, defeating local club Lions FC with an 8-1 thrashing. The most encouraging sign for Super Falcons supporters is star forward Asisat Oshoala scoring two goals as she continues to look in good form for her country. It appears that the Super Falcons are set to play after previous threats of a boycott.

Finally, two African teams who will not be at the World Cup took part in a friendly match at the Stade Lat Dior in Thiès, Senegal. Hosts Senegal defeated Algeria 3-1 courtesy of two late goals for the Lionesses. Of note was a brilliant free kick strike for Algeria’s only goal by Marine Dafeur (watch below).
