Tunisia’s Club Africain avoided a surprise early exit on Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Ethiopian club Bahir Dar Kenema. After an embarrassing 2-0 defeat in the first leg, CA dominated at home with three goals in the first half in front of a large group of supporters. CA are joined by Egypt’s Future FC who also utilized their home advantage to secure a 4-1 second leg victory (4-2 on aggregate) over Tanzanian big spenders Singida Fountain Gate.
Sekhukhune United made it two representatives from South Africa in the group stage, joining SuperSport United following a 1-1 second leg result (4-2 on aggregate) in Kinshasa against Congolese club FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo. A second half goal from Tiklas Thutlwa cancelled out a first half penalty kick from Lupopo’s Manu Bola to extinguish any hopes of a comeback for the hosts. While DR Congo will not have a club in the group stage, the Republic of Congo will be represented by Diables Noirs who defeated Zambia’s MUZA FC 4-1 on aggregate after a 2-0 second leg victory.
Nigeria will be represented by Rivers United in the CAFCC group stage once again after the quarterfinalists from last season found two late goals to defeat Burkina Faso’s Étoile Filante de Ouagadougou 2-0 in Port Harcourt to win by the same score on aggregate. Angola’s Académica do Lobito complete the list of winners from Sunday after overcoming South Sudanese club Al-Merrikh Juba 3-0 at home.
