Transfer roundup: Victor Boniface off to Leverkusen, Kaboré and Nakamba move to Luton

The summer transfer window continues to move along with several more notable transfers involving African players over the past couple of weeks. More details on the most notable moves are below followed by an extended list of transfers that saw African players change teams:

A transfer to a higher level of football was certainly inevitable for Nigerian striker Victor Boniface after his first season with Belgian club Royale Union SG ended with 17 goals and 11 assists in 51 matches and it is now official. The 22-year-old is now a Bayer Leverkusen player after the German Bundesliga club completed a permanent deal for €20 million on Saturday. Boniface helped Union SG to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League where the club fell to Leverkusen 5-2 on aggregate, scoring a goal in the first leg which ended with a 1-1 draw.

The biggest move of the week saw Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana complete a transfer to Manchester United which you can read more about here. Another Cameroonian completed a transfer as well with midfielder Jean Onana moving clubs from France’s RC Lens to Turkish giants Beşiktaş. Onana will be joined by Ghana national team defender Daniel Amartey who joins Beşiktaş on a free transfer from Leicester City. Senegal national team player Formose Mendy is also on the move to a French Ligue 1 club, joining FC Lorient from Ligue 2 side Amiens.

Newly promoted English Premier League club Luton Town continued to be active as they boost their squad to attempt survival in the top tier. Zimbabwean midfielder Marvelous Nakamba was instrumental to their promotion while on loan from Aston Villa and Luton have acquired the 29-year-old on a permanent basis. Luton also have brought in Burkina Faso national team right back Issa Kaboré, who is now on his fourth loan spell from parent club Manchester City after spending last season with Olympique Marseille.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s nightmare spell with Chelsea is finally over after the English club offloaded the Gabon national team star to Marseille for a free transfer. Nigeria national team fullback Ola Aina also moved on a free to English Premier League club Nottingham Forest.
