Transfer Roundup: Mané, Chukwueze and Mailula headline another busy week of player movement

At least close to €180 million in transfer fees were spent for players who represent African national teams over the past week with several notable players switching clubs. Among the players to make our list in the transfer roundup is Senegalese superstar Sadio Mané whose transfer to Saudi club Al-Nassr is not official yet but it appears to be a matter of time before being completed.

Mané will join Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr for a fee reported to be around $45 million following an underwhelming season at German champions Bayern Munich. The Africa Cup of Nations champion joins Algerian playmaker Riyad Mahrez in joining Saudi football with the French-born star completing a move to Al-Ahli for €35 million.

Mali national team striker El-Bilal Touré and Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey were also among the big money moves over the week. Following a successful 2022-23 campaign at UD Alméria where he was crucial to helping the club narrowly avoid relegation, Touré is off to Italy’s Serie A after Atalanta parted ways with €28 million to bring in the striker.

Bassey completed a move to the English Premier League with London side Fulham, moving for €22.5 million from Dutch giants Ajax to continue the rise of the Nigeria national team player. Fellow Nigeria national team member Samuel Chukwueze completed a major transfer to AC Milan in Italy after an excellent season with Spain’s Villarreal and Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo is off to Turkey.

It was a busy week for South African players. Young star Cassius Mailula is off to Major League Soccer after Toronto FC spent €1.5 million to bring him in from South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Goodman Mosele is also on the move with a loan from Orlando Pirates to Chippa United while Rowan Human will stay in the top division DStv Premiership after moving from relegated side Maritzburg United to AmaZulu.

See all the transfers from the past week where Ivory Coast national team player Max Gradel and Morocco’s Ryan Mmaee were among the major moves.
